Most of the African orchids can be found in Central and South Africa where they grow in tropical rain forests and in the Savanna. Many orchids also grow in Madagascar, Mauritius and La Reunion. The terrestrial species are not very popular in Europe: in nature they are threatened by extinction. This threat is mainly caused by slash and burn, and famines. The Wildlife Conservation Society reports that more than 2 million orchids are collected in Tansania and adjacent countries every year where they are transformed to a meat replacing food product.
Our nursery is one of the few in Germany whose laboratory focuses on the conservation of orchid species. We have a choice of the African species we reproduce in our laboratory and on our orchid online shop.
Missionaries collected the first African orchids and sent them to Europe from Madagascar. Madagascar was intensely explored by DE LA BATHIE, DU PETIT-THOUARS, GRANDIDIER and HUMBERT (France). ELLIS from England and from Germany, RUTTENBERG discovered new orchid species.
Harry BOLUS established the foundations of African botanical research in South Africa.
